The sound guy at The Viper Room as we finish our set and the curtains just close, “I hope you guys know that you fucking rocked.”
The Violet Lights played their first show on Tuesday, and although only some fifty people were there to witness it, the show was nothing short of a huge milestone. For the better part of ten years, Joel has been putting all of his hopes, and after scraping a living out of random, dead end jobs, as much of his effort as he possibly could, into turning his music into something with a future. For as long as I’ve known him as an adult, that’s always what I’ve known him to really want. Now, for the very first time since he started, he finally, concretely, has a band that both plays his songs and has real prospects. So now we have a recording, we have a band, and after Tuesday’s exhilaratingly solid and well-received debut show, we are a whole lot closer to being able to say that The Violet Lights are indeed real. It’s been a long time coming, baby.
